 Conflict Resolution Education in Teacher Education (CRETE) Training,
Location: Cleveland, Ohio
Dates: June 15th, 16th, 17th, & 18th, 20099AM  5PM each day
Event: The mission of the Conflict Resolution Education in Teacher Education (CRETE)  project is to provide pre-service and in-service teachers, non-profit education specialists, and education faculty with skills and knowledge of conflict education, classroom management and social and emotional learning necessary for creating constructive, safe learning environments.  The CRETE curriculum combines the best of theory and practice to build and enhance skills in conflict management and classroom management including bullying prevention, communication, positive discipline, managing disruptive students, building classroom and school community, and restorative practices.
Who should attend:  Pre-Service Teachers, In-Service Teachers K-12, Higher Education Faculty, Field Supervisors, and Cooperating Teachers and Mentors
Credit Available:  Social Work, Counselor, RCH, and CEUs. Two graduate credits are also available from Ashland University for an additional fee of $400.
Training Location:  Cuyahoga Community College  Eastern Campus, 4250 Richmond Rd., Highland Hills, Ohio 44122

Conflict Resolution Education (CRE) has proven effective in reducing negative student behavior, improving classroom climate, enhancing students' social and emotional competencies, and providing students critical skills for cooperatively managing conflicts with peers and adults. There is strong evidence proving the link between CRE and academic achievement.  Building School Success through Social and Emotional Learning (Zins, Weissberg, Wang, & Walberg, 2004) reports an impressive body of research proving that students social-emotional competence fosters better academic performance.

The training will work to develop teachers critical skills in conflict education and classroom management through emphasis on:

  • 1. An understanding of conflict
  • 2. Social, emotional and cognitive processes related to constructive conflict management
  • 3. Principles of conflict resolution
  • 4. Skills required to enact constructive conflict management 

Additional goals of CRETE include:

Partners and Funders of the National Project

The Conflict Resolution Education in Teacher Education (CRETE) project is a collaboration between Temple University, Cleveland State University, Wayne State University, University of Akron, Goucher College, Sheppard Pratt Institute, University of Maryland  Baltimore County, Lincoln University, Trinity University, Antioch University, Wilmington College, West Chester University, the Ohio Commission for Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management, and the Global Issues Resources Center to educate pre-service and in-service teachers in conflict education. Colleges and universities are from the following  states: Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas and the District of Columbia.  Since 2004, the CRETE project has been funded for more than $1.8 million by the United States Department of Educations FIPSE Program (Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education), the George S. Gund Foundation, the JAMS Foundation, and the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation.  

Instructor Biographical Information

Tricia S. Jones Ph.D., CRETE Project Director, is professor, Department of Psychological Studies in Education, Temple University and editor-in-chief of Conflict Resolution Quarterly. She has also co-authored Kids Working It Out: Stories and Strategies for Making Peace in Our Schools. Her areas of professional interest include Conflict processes Negotiation and Mediation Theory and Practice, Conflict competence and Social and Emotional Learning For K-12 populations, Organizational conflict and Dispute System Design and Interpersonal communication and conflict. 

John Barnes, Manager, School Based Services, is the director of the Youth Development Program for a non-profit agency providing school-based mentoring and job readiness programs for at-risk and emotionally disturbed youth.  Mr. Barnes has worked as a trainer for the state government office, the Ohio Commission on Dispute Resolution and Conflict Management, for the past 8 years and provides trainings for education department faculty and pre-service teachers at Cleveland State University, the University of Akron, University of Maryland and Wilmington University.  

Diane G. Corrigan, M.Ed. Assistant Clinical Professor Department of Curriculum & Foundations, professor, Cleveland State University (CSU), CRETE Site-team coordinator at CSU.   

Damon Deal is the former coordinator of the Winning Against Violent Environments (WAVE) Program in the Cleveland Public Schools and has been a trainer for 15 years primarily in peer mediation and conflict resolution education.  He is the former coordinator of all mediation trainers in the Cleveland School District and provided mediation training for the K-12 schools.  He was also responsible for faculty, staff, and parent conflict resolution professional development workshops.   

Barbara Thorngren, M.Ed. Peace and Justice Program Coordinator, Associate Adjunct Professor in the Education Department, Nashua Community College, and part-time Peace and Justice Program Coordinator, volunteers as the Co-State Coordinator for the NH U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence Campaign and is the advisor to the Student Peace Alliance Club at Nashua Community College. She has been involved with the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) and coordinated the first Summer Peacebuilding Institute at Nashua Community College (NCC) using AVP materials.
