Westlake Wellness Coalition

Wellness Coalition Met On:
Tuesday, February 17, 2009 9 AM - 12 PM
Community Room Westlake Recreation Center
RSVP to belziled@aol.com
agenda

We were joined by Jean L. Frank, MPH - Manager of Community Initiatives at the Center for Adolescent Health for Case Western Reserve University.

Mrs. Frank shared with us the latest results from the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) as they pertain to our LBMS students (2008 survey results) and WHS students (2006 survey results). Presentation

The Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System was established by the CDC in 1990 and is administered nationally. It monitors priority health risk behaviors.

With those survey results on hands, our community is in a better position to assess our situation and compare it to observed regional and national trends. It is our hope that this will help establish the priorities and/or risky behaviors that our community wants to address.

Early in 2008 Westlake was handed a unique opportunity to address drug use and underage drinking in our community when several of our high school students were arrested for serious drug offenses. If left unaddressed, the drug and underage drinking by our children will continue to place their lives and others in danger as well as negatively impact all segments of this community.

On August 5th the Parent to Parent Network, together with the City of Westlake, the Westlake City Schools, the Westlake Parent Connection and the West Shore Chamber of Commerce asked members from every segment of our community to unite to create a community that encourages wellness and is free from underage alcohol and tobacco use, illegal drug use, and violence. <Read Complete Background>
